Ki
A fact that became a consense among all religions and sciences is that all in the universe is formed by the same vibrating substance, a very subtle energy, called quantum by Physicists. Being so, matter, energy (kinetic, gravitational, electromagnetical and vital) and conscience distinguish themselves only by the concentration and vibration rate of the same universal substance.
For thousands of years Daoism has teached that everything is made of the energy of life and mind (Chinese - qi, Japanese - ki, ke). Matter, that Daoism calls essence ( C - jing, J - sei or shou), is a mass of brute, high-density Ki. Spirit ( C - shen, J - shin, jin) is a mass of pure, disperse Ki.The I Ching says that all that is material is formed by mixing Yin ("negative", "shadow", "cold", "female") and Yang ("positive", "light", "hot", "male") in variated proportions, while all that is spiritual has no Yin or Yang.
Daoism comes from Dao (, that means "way" or "moral"). It is the source of the Universe, and can be considered God. The objective of daoist monks is to change their essence to energy and then their energy to spirit to become a saint above physical life.
Ki: The Basic Energy
The Kanji Ki is formed by two radicals: steam and rice. Rice? Yes, rice. Being the base of Chinese nutrition habits, rice represents life. That way, it is used as radical in the composition of a great number of Kanji related to some idea derived from life. Possibly it was chosen in stead of the Kanji that means life because this one isn't simple enough to be used as a radical, but the Kanji for rice is. That being, the original meaning of Ki must be "lifesteam". And that's how the Ki energy is represented artistically, as a fluid or steam charged with vital life force energy.
Lifestream is a term that appears in one of the most popular RPG videogames ever, Final Fantasy VII, and is exactly the same as Ki.
All primitive cultures that was greatly spiritual and supersticious had the notion of a fluid and invisible force that fills nature and animates the living beings, being that force directly linked with health, and it enteres the body by breathing. In other words, they believed the air is the source of life and health. Each culture gave that fluid force a name: Qi in China, Ki in Japan, Prana/ Shakti/ Kundalini in India, Ti in Hawaii, Mana in Oceania, Aither (Ether) in Greece and Aether/ Aura/ Spiritus in Rome. As time passed, more names showed up: Vril, Odic Force, Orgone, Bioplasma, Telesma, Baraka, Animal Magnetism, Vital Life Force Energy, Cosmic Fire, Serpent Fire, Earth Dragon, the Force. Nearly all martial arts, esoterism and phylosophy and metaphysics doctrines based on Daoism present this concept of spiritual energy.
But let us return to the chinese character. Whatever is the interpretation of the Ki ideograph, it's always a fluid, energy or force spiritual in nature and directly linked to life and health. In it's origin, the energy was that of the aspect of spirit referring to life force. As time passed, that energy also became related to the aspect of spirit that refers to humor and thought. In short, Ki is the psychic and life energy.
According to belief, Ki plays an important role in everything we do. To favour the organic and spiritual balance, Ki can be gathered and guieded by mind. The Chinese are so serious about Ki that they studied it for hundreds of years and discovered that there are several different kinds of Ki. The "Yellow Emperor Classic of Inner Medicine", more than 4000 years old, lists 32 different kinds of Ki.
Translating Ki
When translating Japanese to English we must keep in mind that an exact translation is difficult to be achieved. The Japanese language has several meaning levels, varying from mundane to higly mystic. So being, the context in which the word is being used must be considered when trying to communicate its essence. Ki is often defined in dictionaries as "spirit", "mind", "humor", or even "air", but it's one of several Japanese words that don't have a Western match. The more accurate translations are "aura" and "air", in their original meaning. In other words, when referring to the vital life force fluid energy, it's the original conception of AIR; when referring to the situating in which a strong feeling is "in the air", it's the AURA. The Greek conception of ether is the same of she physical substance of Ki, but doesn't represent the energy of Ki, so ether must be discarded as a Ki translation.
A strong candidate for translation of Ki is the word Spirit(s). It is important to notice that the original meaning of the latin word spiritu is breath, and it ended up representing the life breath, equalling it's meaning to the original concept of Ki. But spiritu didn't represent the energy of humor nor of thought. Thousands of years later, a wide number of meanings were added to such word, including those which it lacked before. That way, spirit is the only word that represents all characteristics of Ki at the same time. The problem is it has other meanings to.
Today, ether refers to a chemical substance, aura to a supposed energy halo created by living creatures, and spirit to several states of conscience. Being Ki the energy of life and mind, and being spirit the life force and conscience at the same time, SPIRITUAL ENERGY is the best translation of Ki.
In fact, the great problem of this translation is that the concepts of mind, soul and spirit are so subjective that they are very misused. I'm no authority in this matter, but I believe I can affirm quite safely the following definitions. Spirit, in its original concept, is the breath of life, the ethereal energy that animates the body. The mind is the individual conscience of each animal, the collection of its thoughts, feelings and sensations, based on the brain. The innate characteristics of each mind comes from the soul, the psychological predisposition that is the essence of each being. It's through the mind that the soul interacts with the world, and the mind also carries the conseqüences of that interaction.
Ki as Life Energy
Ki is the force of life, the imaterial energy that is onipresent and in it's flow animates all living beings and fills the Universe, binding all in one. It is the basic energy that mediates the physical with the spiritual, through which the humor and thought act in the physical world. Being fluid and onipresent, the ancients considered it the air, not nowing about outer space; being associated with the state of mind, they considered it humor-inducing or humor-carrying. It's quality determines its shine, that can only be seen by sensitive people.
As long as a being is alive, it has life force flowing through and around it; when it dies, such life force leaves him, returning to nature. If its life force is low, or there is restriction in its flow, it will feel weak and will be more vulnerable to illness. When the life force is high, and flowing freely, a being hardly will fall ill and will feel strong, confident, and prepared for life.
We receive Ki from the air we breath, from food, sunlight, and sleeping. It is also possible to increase our Ki through breath exercises and meditation. Ki is used by martial artists in their physical training and spiritual devolopment. It's used in meditation breath exercises called Prana-yama, and by shamans of all cultures for divination and science, psychic manifestation and healing. All healers work with the Ki energy, although they can call and understand it differently.
Organic EFFECTS that some associate to Ki energy are considered true even from modern medicine, although the KI ENERGY ITSELF is not considered true. So it is because the conception of Ki was created based on the study of the vital phenomena. In other words, it is only what was believed to be the "cause" of such processes. So being, it's not wise to disregard the techniques devolopted based on a theory by its turn based on facts. Acupunture and Qigong techniques are being proved scientifically, although the "causes" of such effects in which the practicioners believe aren't necessairly real. What matters is not the cause, but the consequence.
Ki as Psychic Energy
An important attribute of Ki energy is that it responds to thoughts and feelings. The power of the flow of Ki through an organism is directly proportional to the quality of thoughts and feelings of the individual. It's our negative thoughts and feelings that cause interruptions in the flow of Ki. The spots wehere negative thoughts and feelings are concentrated is where the flow of Ki restricts itself. In those spots the organism works badly and illness can appear. Even the modern Western medicine admits the influence of mind over the organic condition and several Western doctors point out that 98% of illness are direct or indirect consequences of the state of mind of the patient.
It has to be understood that mind doesn't exist only in the brain; this is only its function center, but the nervous system extends conscience and subconscience to each organ and tissue of the body. Also, parapsychology know that mind extends itself to a subtle energy field of around 60-90 centimeters called the Aura. Because of that, it is wrong to analyse mind and body separately. The state of mind is influenciated by the state of body as much as the state of body is influenciated by the state of mind. Those are facts; if they are consequence of Ki energy is a matter of belief.
The greatest problem are the negative thoughts and feelings residing in the subconscience, because we aren't aware of them so we can't change or eliminate them by ourselves. That is said to be the job of techniques like Reiki, for example. It's doctrine says that, throught their techniques, Ki is guided by the Divine Conscience, so it knows exactly where to go and how to respond to restriction in the flow of Ki. When it flows through an unhealthy spot, Reiki "washes" any negative thoughts or feelings and eliminates them, even if the individual isn't aware of it. So, being free of the healer's awareness and influence, the Reiki healing method is becoming more and more popular in the West.
Reiki: Universal Ki
Today, Reiki refers to a manual technique of Ki channeling for healing purposes and is spreading through the world. But this world appears in some mangas and animes in stead of only Ki because it's meaning is wider.
Rei means: spirits in general; the spiritual aspect of the human opposing to the physical aspect; spirit (of the dead), ghost, soul; anything related to the deceased; goodness, god, excelent, efficient; clever; life; a living being, a human being; divine, charismatic, supernatural, mysterious; the brilliance of the spirit, of a god or of a sage; inconceivable spiritual skill, charismatic power, charisma, wonderful, a wonder; a person or being with spiritual or supernatural powers, a shaman; a supernatural being or beast (mythical), a feary, an elf; pure; brilliant; an nickname.
The mystics of the Reiki healing method say that in a deeper and more complet idea rei represents the Superior Consciousness (God, or Dao, in the case) and call Reiki of variations of the expression Universal or Cosmic Vital Life Force Energy.
Four ways to write Reiki: Modern Japanese, Chinese (read Ling Qi), Ancient Japanese and Katakana. The three first are written through ideographs but the fourth is written through phonographs.
Touki: Battle Ki
The philosphy of several modalities of martial arts are based on controlling Ki to raise physical stamina and strenght to extraordinary levels (Kung-fu/Quanfu, Aikido) or simply to keep oneself healthy (Tai-chi). The same occurs with japanese comics, animation and videogames. In these, the Ki used is referred as Battle Ki (tou-ki, commonly translated as "battle spirits") and it is manipulated in attacks as magic energy.
Battle Ki is the violent manifestation of Ki when the individual deeply focuses in his goal. The Ki that envolops the body (Aura Ki) can be focused in the fists or feet to harden them to do powerful blows.
Scientific Analysis
If you can't believe all this by simple disbelief or by faith, don't forget that most of the most traditional Ki techniques really work and some are even proven scientifically. Probably the Aura Ki is the body's energy field, which is a reflection of the metabolism. Most of such energy should be the electromagnetic field produced by the nervous system's activity.
That means that there is a great possibility that the Ki principles are mere physical processes. If that is proven, the principles of Ki will leave the metaphysics field to become part of the science field. Obviously, the same can't be said about the ORIGINAL CONCEPT of Ki, that certainly is totally metaphysical. To understand this analysis, it is necessary to understand that the CONCEPT of Ki and the PRINCIPLES of Ki are two different things. The concept is a cause that for most people can seem very fantasious. But the principles are the consequence, the real phenomena that weren't explained scientifically to date, at least not that I know about it. If they are explained, a NEW CONCEPT will take place, granting a SCIENTIFICAL CAUSE to the Ki principles.
But let us return to the analysis of the Aura and its possible physical features and causes. The nervous system works based on electric impulses through ions, atoms electrically charged. Electric currents in general create magnetic fields, and this current-field set forms electromagnetic energy. The Aura is nothing more than the electromagnetic field formed by the body. Also, the nervous system needs oxigen to work and, as we saw before, the "spirit energy" comes from breathing. Next, the apparently esoteric features of Ki energy are explained as physical processes.
The nervous system is the centre of the whole organism of any animal species. The tissues are always receiving sensations by touch, even if we don't touch anything in special. The cells feel one another, we feel the flow and pressure of the blood etc. In normal health, those are sensations so insignificant that we don't even notice them. But when health's not well, we feel pain or pressure. Those sensations provoke electric impulses in the nervs until they reach the brain and are interpreted. Also, the mind's working also is based on electric pulses. So we can realize that even physically the Aura mirrors not only physical health but also emotions and thoughts. So being, the flow of the tiny and apparently insignificant pulses has a energy pattern particular to each individual, being it the reflexion of the constitution of its body and mind.
Energy fields that touch the Aura can influence or be influenced by the body, even subtly. As the brains are specialized in recognize electromagnetic pulses, another field could stimulate it too. By what I concluded, a powerful Aura can emit thoughts to other person estimulating his brain, and a very sensitive brain can be stimulated easily by other Auras (and other energy fields) and receive feelings and maybe thoughts too - at least theorically. If it's true, maybe it's what we can call telepathy...
Besides all that, since the Aura has mainly a electromagnetic nature and responds to thoughts and humor, if it's excepcionally energetic and by some mental unbalance it is activated more than normal, it can cause phenomena said to be supernatural, like telepathy and physical deeds (like those of martial artists) that we see occasionally on TV. Not to mention that the chinese technique of ChiKung/QiGong (Ki Practice) used by the famous Yan Xin has its influence on matter studied in laboratory dozens of times, proving it works, being it an esoteric basic energy or a physical energy field. And we must not forget that the chakras, points were Ki converges, are at the plexi (nets of nerves) and vital organs, which only strengthens the theory of it being the nervous system's energy field.
